Message to Mean Girls in Media: the 80s called they want their B word back!Sunday, February 7, 2010 at 3:51 pm — admin
"I know journalists aren't supposed to use words like mean and dumb, but I can't help it. Palin is one of the meanest people on the public stage today. She wallows in it. She loves it! Also? Possibly one of the dumbest." ~Joan Walsh, Salon.com What has Joan so Mean Girl Goosed? A Tea Party event and the mere Idea of Palin opening her mouth. If Joan had her way, Palin would be sent to the Gulag for a term of not less than 200 years. An AP writer knocked Palin's speech at the "tea party" {quotes theirs} event as short of policy ideas. Perhaps the AP writer and Sexist Joan should focus on the lack of policy ideas from the man actually sitting in the Oval Office, eh? From NYTimes piece on Friday Jan. 29th, 2010: Obama Sets Ambitious Export Goal":
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/29/business/29trade.html?sq=obama sets ambitious export goal&st=cse&scp=1&pagewanted=print Now let me see... an honest journalist writing the header for this story it would write: Subhead: like election speechs, long on rhetoric, short of policy! But Obama Protectionism is at its apogee at the Times and certainly at Salon and the theater of Obama Adoration the runs continuously in Joan's daft sexist mean girl head! Both AP and Joan mocked Palin for ripping on Obama AS IF Obama didn't build his entire campaign on Mocking Bush! Oh, wait...women just ain't allowed to do what men are expected to do! Shut up, be sweet, commandith anti-feminists such as Joan. The AP was more subtle saying:
Funny how Obama's self-promotional books and all the $$ they pulled in to Obama's own pockets are never mentioned as a negative. Palin is MEAN and NASTY and DUMB for talking money from politics and ripping the opposition. Obama is THE ONE for doing the same thing. Actually men are all expected to do such things. Women...be helpmates to your male superiors! Power be not woman's name! Women wake up. Hillary was killed by the media, Palin was killed by the media and ANY woman who attempts to run for POTUS will be KILLED by the media! UNless.....we as a nation are too smart, going forward, to be crassly manipulated yet again. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2010/02/06/politics/p05... http://www.salon.com/news/politics/sarah_palin/index.html?story=/opinion... |

When women like Walsh say
When women like Walsh say they support powerful women, what they mean is, "I support a powerful woman, as long as it's MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!"
The hysteria of Salon comment
The hysteria of Salon comment section and the sexism there drove me away a long time ago, but you all are right this is an interesting exchange.
Joan's response is especially silly!!!!!!!!
Again, here is what Joan says to Jama's charges:
From Joan Walsh
"jama, have you ever read Salon before? Have you ever read my writing? Do you know anything about my point of view during the Democratic primary? Do you know I'm a woman? Who's editor in chief of Salon? Are you just trolling sites that are critical of Palin, knowing nothing of the sites or the writer? Ignorance seems to be on the march tonight, and proud of it!"
---------------------------------------------------
Joan Walsh has used sexism so abundantly against Ms. Palin she is downright Rushian in her hatred of women. EVERYONE who reads Salon on a regular basis knows the sexism Walsh and Salon employed against Palin. Palin was a "fuckable" "blow up doll" to name just two of hundreds of sexist insults Salon under the masthead of Joan hurled at Palin this past many months. Nevermind having her sexing up a moose!
That Joan thinks frequent readers don't know of her sexist past smacks of unreasonable thought!
Joan also suggests that because she (with a lot of angst and female guilt) supported Hillary over Obama during the primary she is now immune to charges of sexism and cultural resistance to powerful women.
Joan is as deluded as the person who holds up their one black friend as evidence of lack of racism. Joan's reasoning is that she can use the n word as often as she likes now that she has that one black friend to trot out in defense of herself.
Joan used sexism against Palin often and will glee. If women are allowed to use sexism against the women they don't like then by extension we are allowed to use racism against blacks whose opinions differ from our own! Bullshit!
And women who have worked with other women know that just because a woman holds some power does NOT mean these women tolerate other women in their barn with power. Especially women who are not their yes women and openly compete with their position on issues.
Women have not been taught or culturized to accept female competition. We are taught to have mean dirty cat fights with women who we deem competitors! Things may be getting better in this area, but dare you to ask women if they'd rather a female or male boss? All this is complex and when Joan says that b/c she is the editor of Salon this makes her amenable to powerful women who would challenge her opinions or turf is fully undercut by Joan's outward lash at someone who is challenging her directly--Jama in this case. (I dont' recall Joan every saying that McCain was MEAN or Dumb or putting him in boxer shorts with a vertebrate licking his private parts. Joan would NEVER consider such a scheme becasue she has too much respect for males to do such a bizarre thing! But.... SHE, JOAN, did this to Palin! All because Palin was a threat to her male.
Her response to Jama: you are stupid and a troll. Oh so sad. Sad indeed. Women who challenge Joan are scum and stupid and trolls.
Joan thinks of herself as ready to accept powerful women, but her willingness and alacrity to use sexism to attack a woman with whom she disagrees is direct evidence to the contrary.
Joan is stuck in the mode of women feeling the need to control women with whom they disagree or with whom they have not approved of. Most importantly, Joan lacks respect for women and the ability of women to not be cookie cutter clones of herself!
Sorry for the long comment. But racists who say they are not racist appall me as do sexists who deny their misogyny!
Extremely interesting.
Extremely interesting. Buried in the letters section, I read something else troubling.
That is an important statement of how divided this country has become under the Obama Administration. This started with Obama's campaign which I feel was designed to divide his own party. Obama is the most divisive public figure this country has ever endured. I worry deeply about our future when Obots are willing to disown family over a vote!
I also remember the mean spirit of Sarah Silverman saying Jewish children should threaten to disown their Jewish grandparents if they did not vote for Obama.
Obots scare me with their hate.
Yes! There's so much wrong
Yes! There's so much wrong with the threat! Obots seem more fanatical than any political fringe I've every come across! Ms. Walsh seems to have gone off the boat completely!
I just scrolled down and here
I just scrolled down and here is Joan's reply and a interesting back and forth. Notice How it is Joan who is the MEAN Girl in the exchange, calling Jama, stupid!
From Joan Walsh
I really find it amusing when right-wingers tell me I'm jealous of Sarah Palin. When Scott Brown criticizes Barack Obama, nobody suggests he's "jealous." When Obama criticizes Brown, vice versa. When Mitch McConnell criticizes Harry Reid...etc. It's ridiculously sexist, but I guess that goes along with being a Republican nowadays.
I love my life. Love my family. Love my work. Love my brains. Envy Sarah Palin? Really?

Palin
Yeah, Joan Walsh, but cant you acknowledge, at least, that the Hillary Clinton hatred was similarly over the top and extreme as the Palin hatred? Why didn't you see it such hatred about say, John McCain or John Kerry or any other man?
Maybe it has to do with the double whammy of having a woman that disagrees with your views that is also your potential leader ?? I dont know, but I do think there is an irrational element to the Palin hatred. She is not the antichrist, after all.

Joan drops off here, while others point out that Cheney was hated and Kerry was maligned.
But the point is lost on these defenders of sexism that the hatred of Palin and Hillary was far more personal and sexually oriented that that Cheney received.
As a matter of fact, most of Cheney's haters admired his smarts while hating his wrongness on position. As for Kerry, if anyone can find me an example of smearing Kerry as a nitwit, I'd like to see that. He was Swift Boated, but so was McCain. Neither of those attacks went beyond the typical political tactics. Obama Swift Boated Alice Park and the male he was running against when he had his opponents divorce records unsealed.
Jama responds:
Palin
Discoursarian - I have to acknowledge that you are right, Dick Cheney has been the object of as much, if not more, hate than Sarah Palin or Hillary Clinton. I will say, though, that Cheney has actually
held a high office, so, arguably, people could have a reason to hate him.
Hillary and Palin were only candidates agwhen the hate against them started and their views were not very different from those of others in their respective political parties. I am still not convinced there is no sexism here, especially when it comes to calling Palin "dumb" or Hillary a "*itch" - very very typical derogatory terms for women. There is no reason to believe that Hillary is more of a "*itch" or Palin is any dumber than any of those male politicians out there. Women, especially, should take care not to fall into these traps.

OMG! I just linked over to
OMG! I just linked over to Walsh post on Salon. Joan writes like an unhinged person filled with hatred. It actually frightened me.
Enough of Joan, though. I found this great letter in the comment section.
Palin
The only reason why Sarah Palin is so hated - i.e. in this article called "stupid" and vilified as a money- grubbing loser - is because she is a strong woman that could be our president. Americans (including most American women that think they are feminists) just can not handle the thought of a strong woman as a their potential leader/president. The same thing happened to Hillary Clinton - she was similarly despised. It is ok for women to be middle managers, but try for something more than that and you will be destroyed. Once Hillary found her "place" the heat was off her. The same will be for Palin. America and this journalist are not ready yet for a woman leader and will concoct whatever excuses they need to justify their irrational conclusions. Yeah, compared to the other American genius politicians she is "stupid" - hah!
