After the election, the Taliban sent a letter to Mr. Obama saying he should “observe the norms of human rights.” Femisex did a LOL over that, but today we are crying. According to the AP, craven Taliban militants used squeeze bottles to spray acid on women and girls who were committing the high crime of educating themselves—the victims were on their way to school.

With high indignation folks will read this story and feel smug—such brutality from the dogs of the Taliban! Such base cowards! The AP story fuels this indignation with its tone and sharp focus on the misogyny involved by the militants.

Now I in no way want to detract from the horror of the Taliban’s actions towards women, but…..I do want to point your attention to an article that ran on Nov. 7th 08 in the NYTimes. The Title: Losses Mount, Fears Overwhelm, a Life-Ending Decision is Made.

This article is about violence against women and children as well, but the tone is full of sympathy and wonderment. It is spun as a tale of male suicide rather than male brutality and domination. Six men are featured in the article, three of whom not only killed themselves but took wives, children, even a mother-in-law with them.

K. Upender was a distraught stock speculator in India who suffered steep losses in the Indian stock market this fall, according to the police, just before he chose to open the gas line in his house, light a match and kill himself, his wife and his 2-year-old son.
What they had in common was a livelihood in the financial industry, a wrenching downturn in that industry and death by their own hands.
